Purely Good

Updated: Apr 12, 2020

The Greyton Main Road

My third adventure to Greyton, I knew I had to make more than one trip to their local vegan eatery, Pure Cafe. As you drive through the beautiful main road where the golden sun rays pierce through the seasonal changing leaves that flow from the branches of trees into the road, living for as long as I am alive, maybe even longer, you come across a warmly painted cozy corner where Pure Cafe is situated.

Entrance to Pure Cafe

It was created as part of the Greyton Transition Town, a community based, non-profit organization that aims to inspire the people of Greyton and neighboring communities to work together to bring awareness and create change in our environment to achieve sustainability and conscious living. Owned by the Greyton Farm Animal Sanctuary, it provides delicious vegan alternatives to the town of Greyton that further promotes the message that animals are not here for our consumption.

The silhouette of the local barista

As your feet trap on the miniature rocks leading up to the seating area, you see a coffee truck that is run by a woman who's exact silhouette is replicated on the front, sides, and back of the white metal vehicle in which she creates the warm goodness ranging from cappuccinos to flat whites, at such an affordable price, might I add. You can order your warm, dairy-free goodness as a to-go or for a sit-down. One of our visits saw us nibbling on peanut butter bliss balls as we awaited the foamy caffeinated beverages that we drank as we cut into the moistest carrot cake and scooping coconut cream onto a piece of delicious apple pie. With sights of mountains in the background framed in wooden structures with vines and bunting winding in, out and around it, I grew my appreciation for nature even more and as I looked at my friends, without saying a single word, we telepathically communicated one thought...pure bliss.

We knew that it was not going to be our only trip to Pure. Upon more trips to the town from the Greyton Farm Animal Sanctuary that we volunteered at, we enjoyed chickpea and aubergine curry, creamy avocado on warm sourdough bread, kombucha that uncontrollably foamed and leaked beyond the opening of the bottle as soon as it was opened, moist muffins that changed from banana to cappuccino as the days passed, thick smoothies that were consciously served with glass straws and flavorful apple pie and carrot cake.

The lovely chef Collien cooking up a storm.

The purely wonderful ladies of the cafe will greet you with a warm smile while handing over a simple two-sided menu for you to make your decision simple. They are very attentive and are always popping over to check if everything is fine, Their smiles when they walk towards your table or past you to attend to other guests make your experience that much better as you feel so welcomed.

Not only do they serve delicious food, but they also sell household and toiletry goodies, all cruelty-free and some of even plastic free too! Alongside the holistic shelf, you see an array of groceries, from unprocessed turmeric to dry legumes, seeds, and tea, among others. A conscious path of living is made so much easier when these sustainable products and edibles are made available at a store that is a mere walk away.

Things to note:

A market vendor selling his home grown herbal plants.
  • Wednesdays are for SPECIALS! Aside from grabbing a warm beverage and a sweet treat at an incredible discount, you can also get a few breakfast and lunch options at half the original price. It also hosts a market where vendors sell freshly baked bread, vegetables that were harvested the morning of and other homemade goodies, all while listening to the beautiful strings of an acoustic guitar being tunefully strummed by a smiling woman who greets you as you travel from stall to stall.

  • The food is made with locally produced, seasonal vegetables and fruit that is grown in the fields and produce gardens of Greyton.

  • They have a standard breakfast and lunch menu but their culinary creativity is tasted through their changing soups and curries of the day.

When you see yourself driving the beautiful town, do make sure to pop in and taste what they have to offer. You will not be sorry!
